Getting Started with Tomatoes
First you will need to decide on what type of tomato you will be growing. There are tomatoes that are for eating, for canning, as well as some tomatoes that are used for pastes. Tomatoes also come in a variety of different sizes including extra large, and small cherry tomatoes. Colors for the tomatoes will vary depending on what type of seeds you have. Tomatoes can be green, red, orange, yellow and even purple. Do your research and see the benefits of each type of tomato plant and choose the one that is best for you and your space.
Planting the Tomato
If you plan to start your tomato from seeds, you will want to do so about 7 to 8 weeks before spring arrives. If you have a greenhouse, you can even start your seeds before then. Be sure to plant your seeds and water them accordingly. Next you will need to determine where you will plant your tomatoes. If you are planning on container gardening you will need to find a suitable container that is big enough for the growth of the plant, as well as big enough for the roots of the plant. If you are planning to put your tomatoes in the garden you will need to prepare the ground and dig a decent size hole for your tomato plant. Make sure that you put enough dirt around your tomato plant to ensure that the roots go deep in the ground and nothing damages them.
Next you will need to make sure that you have either a tomato stake or tomato cage around your tomato plants. Tomatoes get heavy, especially when the fruit starts to come in, so you have to be careful and make sure that the plant has something to support it, while it is growing and producing tomatoes. Tomato cages can be purchased at many hardware stores, as can tomato stakes. You can also make these supports yourself.

Care of Tomatoes
Once you have your tomatoes planted you will need to make sure that you take care of them. They will need to be watered frequently depending on your local weather. Be sure to never over water them as that can lead to mold growth and other problems. You will also want to fertilize your plants. You can purchase a fertilizer from your local garden supply store or you can create your own. If you have animals such as rabbits or chickens, you can make your own compost that will be great to grow the tomatoes in. Be sure to fertilize your tomatoes at least every 2 weeks for optimal growth. While your tomatoes are growing, you will want to make sure that you stake them or place a tomato cage around them. This will give the plant extra support while it is bearing fruit.
